"This is a track I stumbled across whilst browsing a playlist made be The 1975. Whatever your opinion on the guys who sang ‘Chocolate’, they do have very good taste. Their playlists always contain artists like David Bowie, M83, My Bloody Valentine… The kind of lists that make music critics go weak at the knees, basically.
This song in particular, released only two years ago, is almost a throwback to the eighties. The snare drums sound nothing like those from an actual drum-kit, the synths are almost reflectively shiny, and the whole track is covered in sticky, sticky reverb. There’s even a bridge in which I thought Kenny Loggins was going to sneak in a chorus of ‘Danger Zone’ (don’t worry, he didn’t).
As well as being stylistically fantastic, the track is an all round excellent pop song.
The tempo begins at frantic pace; singer Caroline Polachek teasing the listener with every chorus, waiting for the synth and guitar layers to build before the song finally reaches its climactic moment around the familiar line ‘I belong in your arms’ - queuing three-minute-pop-song euphoria."
Taken from Liberty Belle
This is piece I wrote for Liberty Belle's 'Star This on Spotify' feature. This is a weekly feature in which writers scout out tracks from the Spotify library for recommendation.
Spotify was chosen as it is a free service that can easily be found online, being a student orientated magazine this was very important as it meant avoiding having to recommend readers spending money they obviously don't have - making the content completely irrelevant.
Spotify has also been used to make playlists by the magazine to generate content for revision period as well as accompanying festival features.
