Losing - Becky Hill
If you haven’t already forgotten ‘Afterglow’, the recent top ten hit from Wilkinson, you should be familiar with the voice of Becky Hill. As well as Wilkinson, the Worcester born girl has collaborated with Rudimental and was the vocalist and co-writer of Oliver Helden’s number 1 hit ‘Gecko (overdrive)’. Not bad, huh?
‘Losing’ is actually the second song Becky has released as a solo artist, following on from ‘Caution to the wind’. This track is a much more confident affair featuring more of an electro-soul feel, as opposed to the almost minimalist, pitter-patter nature of her previous release.
It’s a shame really that this arrives as the summer months are reaching a close. The tracks warm sound, combined with Becky’s breathy vocals, is perfectly set for blue skies and swimming pools. Instead, just try to use the sun-laden beats to distract yourself from the oncoming cold weather.
Special ft. Maxine Ashley - Billion
Not going out this week? This track will persuade you otherwise.
Amongst the wobbly bass line, florescent synths, and house beat, Maxine Ashley delivers her vocal lines with a force capable of flipping a library table – certainly enough to move your feet.
Centuries - Fall Out Boy
I’m not ashamed to admit that as a teenager I was mad about Fall Out Boy. ‘Grand Theft Autumn’ was like an anthem and all the sentence-long track titles on ‘From Under the Cork Tree’ seemed really witty (at the time). But like with all childhood heroes, you do eventually have to move on.
I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find the band have produced a modern day hit to be proud of.
‘Centuries’ contains none of the pop-punk characteristics the band made themselves famous for. The guitar, rather than being the focus, is taken behind the drum track, occasionally embellishing the melody with a subtlety that’s more The 1975 than Blink-182. This leaves room for the snare to have the type of whack that’s normally only reserved for hip-hop – adding more force to the weight of Patrick Stump’s words;
‘We’ll go down in history / Remember me for centuries’
I will, Patrick, I really will.
